Short answer: No one date counts as “Hispanic Mother’s Day.” Most people searching the phrase mean Mexican Mother’s Day (Día de las Madres), which is always May 10. Guatemala and El Salvador use the same date. The 2026 celebration was Sunday, May 10. The next one is Monday, May 10, 2027, one day after US Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 9.
Other Spanish-speaking countries use different dates. Spain uses the first Sunday in May, Argentina the third Sunday in October and Panama December 8. If you’re buying for a mom from a particular country, check her country’s date first. The table below lists them.
When is Hispanic Mother’s Day?
Mexico’s date is fixed on the calendar, so the day of the week moves every year. That matters for planning. A Sunday May 10 means a long family lunch. A Wednesday May 10 means a dinner after work or a school event.
Mexican Mother’s Day dates, 2026–2030
| Year | Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador (May 10) | US Mother’s Day (2nd Sunday in May) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Sunday, May 10 (passed) | Sunday, May 10 (same day) |
| 2027 | Monday, May 10 | Sunday, May 9 |
| 2028 | Wednesday, May 10 | Sunday, May 14 |
| 2029 | Thursday, May 10 | Sunday, May 13 |
| 2030 | Friday, May 10 | Sunday, May 12 |
Is today Mother’s Day in Mexico?
Only if today is May 10. We’re writing this in October 2026, so Mexico’s next Mother’s Day is about seven months away, on Monday, May 10, 2027. If you’re looking for a Hispanic Mother’s Day that’s coming up sooner, Panama celebrates on Tuesday, December 8, 2026. Argentina’s just passed on Sunday, October 18.
Mother’s Day dates across the Spanish-speaking world
The question “when is Mother’s Day for Hispanic people?” has about a dozen answers. Countries fall into two groups: those with a fixed calendar date and those that use a Sunday rule, which floats.
| Country | Date | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador | May 10 | Fixed |
| Spain | First Sunday in May (May 2, 2027) | Floating |
| Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Uruguay, Honduras | Second Sunday in May (same as the US) | Floating |
| Paraguay | May 15 | Fixed |
| Bolivia | May 27 | Fixed |
| Nicaragua | May 30 | Fixed |
| Dominican Republic | Last Sunday in May | Floating |
| Costa Rica | August 15 | Fixed |
| Argentina | Third Sunday in October | Floating |
| Panama | December 8 | Fixed |
Two practical notes. First, families who live in the US often celebrate twice, on the US date and on their home country’s date. Second, ask instead of guessing. A Cuban American mom in Hialeah and a Mexican American mom in Homestead are probably celebrating on different days.
What to expect this year
Is Mexican Mother’s Day a holiday?
It isn’t a federal public holiday in Mexico. Banks, government offices and most businesses keep their normal hours. In practice, many schools hold Mother’s Day programs, and plenty of employers let mothers leave early. In the US, May 10 is an ordinary business day, so expect nothing to close.
The weekday matters most here. In 2027, May 10 is a Monday, right after US Mother’s Day. That means two celebrations on back-to-back days. Many families will hold one big gathering on Sunday and something smaller on Monday, like breakfast, a serenade or dinner.
How Mexicans celebrate Mother’s Day
- Las Mañanitas at dawn. Families wake mom with the traditional birthday-and-celebration song. Sometimes a mariachi or trío plays it, often around 6 or 7 a.m.
- Mass. Many Catholic families go to a special Mother’s Day service.
- A big family meal. Mole, tamales, pozole, barbacoa or carnitas, with tres leches or flan for dessert.
- Flowers. Red roses and carnations are the classic choice. Florists in Mexico have one of their busiest days of the year.
- School performances. Kids put on dances, recite poems and give mom handmade gifts.
Why is Mexican Mother’s Day on May 10?
It goes back to 1922. Rafael Alducin, a journalist at the Mexico City newspaper Excélsior, campaigned for a national day honoring mothers, and Education Minister José Vasconcelos backed the idea. They picked May 10 because May was already associated with the Virgin Mary and with motherhood, and a fixed date was easy to remember. Some historians also note an earlier local celebration in Mérida, Yucatán, around 1913. Accounts differ, but the 1922 campaign is what made it national.

Gifts that land
- Flowers, delivered early. Roses are traditional. Mixed bouquets with carnations cost less and last longer.
- A home-cooked meal she doesn’t have to make. Take over the mole or tamales this year, or order them from a local cocinera.
- A serenade. Even three songs from a trío or mariachi at the front door is the gift most moms remember.
- Photos and handwritten cards in Spanish. They cost almost nothing and often mean the most.
Spanish Mother’s Day songs for the playlist
- “Las Mañanitas” (the essential one)
- “Amor Eterno” (Rocío Dúrcal / Juan Gabriel). It’s often played in honor of mothers who have died.
- “Señora, Señora” (Denise de Kalafe)
- “Madre Querida” (traditional)
- “El Hijo Desobediente” and other rancheras, if the family leans traditional
If you’re not in Mexico
Call before the family meal starts, not during it. If you’re sending a gift, use a Mexican florist or delivery service and order at least a week ahead. Local networks get swamped in the days before May 10.
Costs and planning tips
These are typical ranges we see in Florida metros. Prices change with the city and with how close to the date you book.
| Item | Typical range | Book by |
|---|---|---|
| Mariachi serenade (3–5 songs) | $300–$700 | 3–6 weeks ahead |
| Trío or solo guitarist | $150–$350 | 2–4 weeks ahead |
| Dozen roses, delivered | $60–$120 | 7–10 days ahead |
| Tres leches cake (bakery) | $30–$70 | 3–5 days ahead |
| Tamales by the dozen | $20–$40 | 1 week ahead |
| Restaurant meal for a family of 6 | $150–$350 | 2–3 weeks ahead |
- Mariachi sunrise slots go first. Groups stack 6–10 short serenades in one morning. If you want 6 a.m., book in March.
- Expect delivery surcharges. Florists often add rush or holiday fees in the US Mother’s Day week. When the two holidays fall close together, as in 2027, that pricing carries straight through to May 10.
- Split the two days on purpose. If the dates are back to back, make one day the big restaurant outing and the other a home meal. Don’t pay peak prices twice.
- Restaurants run long waits. Mexican restaurants in Hispanic neighborhoods can have waits of 60–90 minutes on a weekend May 10. Reserve, or go for an early lunch.
Florida and local notes
About 28% of Florida residents identify as Hispanic. Miami-Dade’s community is mostly Cuban, so most families there celebrate on the second Sunday in May, the same as the US date. May 10 makes a bigger impact elsewhere:
- Homestead and Immokalee have large Mexican and Guatemalan communities. Taquerías and panaderías get busy and run out of tres leches early.
- Lake Worth Beach and Palm Beach County are home to one of the largest Guatemalan communities in the US. Expect church celebrations and family gatherings on May 10.
- Orlando, Kissimmee, Tampa and Plant City have growing Mexican and Central American populations, and local mariachi groups book out fast.
Local events change every year. Check parish bulletins, Hispanic chambers of commerce and Spanish-language radio in April for serenades and church programs. It’s the same planning habit we recommend for other seasonal dates, like our guide to closing for 4th of July and our recap of National French Fry Day free fries: confirm hours and offers close to the date, because they change.
