Martin Luther King Jr. Day Sales 2027: Which Deals Are Worth It, Ranked by a Price-History Test

Martin Luther King Jr. Day falls on Monday, January 18, 2027. It’s the first retail sale weekend of the year, and it’s a real one, but it isn’t Black Friday. Some categories reliably drop to their lowest prices of the winter. Others are marked “sale” but cost the same as they did in December, or will cost less in four weeks.

This guide sorts those categories using a test you can repeat yourself. One note on framing: the holiday honors Dr. King’s life and work, and it’s also a federally designated National Day of Service. If you’re shopping that weekend, consider setting aside part of the day for a local volunteer project too.

How We Chose These MLK Day Sales

Most MLK Day sales roundups list retailer names. We scored each category on five questions instead:

  1. Price history. Is the MLK Day price below the item’s lowest price over the past 90 days? A “40% off” tag compared with an inflated list price doesn’t count.
  2. Better date ahead? Does the same category reliably get cheaper at Presidents Day, before the Super Bowl or in the spring?
  3. Return policy. Do you get at least a 30-day return window, or a sleep trial of 100 nights or more for mattresses?
  4. Shipping and fees. Is delivery free? Are there haul-away, setup or restocking fees?
  5. Stacking. Can you combine the sale price with a coupon code, cash-back portal or card offer?

A category earns a Buy rating if it passes the first two tests in most past years. It earns Wait if a better window usually follows. Specific 2027 offers get announced in early January. We wrote this guide in October 2026 and will update it with confirmed retailer deals as they’re announced. The discount ranges below are typical of recent MLK weekends, not guarantees. Best Martin Luther King Day Sales by Category

Mattresses and bedding: the strongest MLK Day category

Mattresses are the main reason this holiday counts as a shopping weekend. Brands compete hard for New Year’s sleep buyers, and many add free pillows, sheets or adjustable-base discounts.

The trade-off is that online mattress brands run some kind of sale almost every week. So the headline percentage tells you little. What matters is the actual price for your size, usually queen, compared with what the brand charged in late November. If the MLK price matches or beats Black Friday, buy it. If it’s $100 to $200 higher, the deal is fine but not special, and Presidents Day on Feb. 15 will probably bring a similar offer.

Before you pay, check whether white-glove delivery and old-mattress removal are included. Those fees can add $100 to $250.

Winter clothing and outerwear clearance

Retailers want to clear coats, boots and sweaters before spring stock arrives. MLK weekend is often when the first deep clearance cuts appear. Discounts keep growing into February, but sizes sell out. For a common size, waiting can pay off. For an uncommon one, buy now.

Appliances and home goods

Home Depot and Lowe’s typically run MLK appliance events covering washers, dryers, refrigerators and ranges. Prices on the outgoing year’s models are usually competitive. One detail that matters: some advertised prices require buying two or more appliances from the same brand to get the top discount. Read the fine print for the per-unit price.

TVs, laptops and tech: usually better to wait

New TV lineups are revealed at CES in early January and ship in the spring. The best TV prices of the winter tend to come in the two weeks before the Super Bowl, and older models drop further once the new ones land. Laptop and phone “sales” on MLK weekend usually just repeat holiday pricing. Unless a price tracker shows a new low, we’d skip this category.

Fitness gear for New Year’s resolutions

Dumbbells, resistance bands, yoga mats and wearables see real January promotions. Treadmills and bikes are a different story. Demand peaks in January, so the best prices on large equipment often come in late spring or summer. Costs, Hours and Freebies on MLK Day

MLK Day is a federal holiday, so expect these closures and openings:

  • Closed: federal offices, U.S. Postal Service (no regular mail delivery), most banks and credit unions, and the stock markets. Many public schools and county offices are closed too.
  • Open: nearly all major retailers, including Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s and Best Buy, plus grocery stores, pharmacies and most restaurants, generally on regular hours.
  • Shipping: UPS and FedEx usually run, but service can vary. Online orders placed over the weekend may ship a day later than usual.

Freebies such as movie-theater popcorn offers and free admission days at national parks have appeared in past years. The National Park Service has historically waived entrance fees on MLK Day, but confirm the 2027 fee-free schedule before you plan a trip around it. Treat any freebie list as unconfirmed until the business announces it for 2027. For how we handle holiday-hours questions at other times of year, see our guide to closings for the 4th of July.

MLK Holiday Sales vs. Presidents Day, the Super Bowl and Black Friday

  • Buy on MLK weekend: mattresses (when they beat Black Friday), winter clearance, bedding and linens, current-year appliances.
  • Wait for the Super Bowl run-up (early February): TVs and soundbars.
  • Wait for Presidents Day (Feb. 15, 2027): mattresses, if MLK prices don’t beat your benchmark. Presidents Day deals are often similar or slightly better.
  • Wait for spring or summer: treadmills, outdoor furniture and grills.
  • Wait for Black Friday: laptops, game consoles and most small electronics.

Planning Tips to Avoid Fake MLK Jr Day Sales

  1. Set your benchmark early. Write down or screenshot prices for your shortlist in early January. Many “MLK prices” go live the Thursday or Friday before the holiday and run through Tuesday or later, so your benchmark should come from before that.
  2. Use a price tracker. Tools like CamelCamelCamel for Amazon, or browser extensions such as Keepa or Honey, show 90-day price charts. If the “was” price never actually appeared on the chart, ignore the percentage off.
  3. Stack carefully. A cash-back portal at 3% to 10% plus a card-linked offer can beat a bigger headline discount. Some brands block coupon codes on items that are already discounted, so test the code at checkout before you count on it.
  4. Read return windows. Clearance apparel is sometimes final sale. Mattress trials can require you to keep the mattress 30 nights before you can return it, and some charge a pickup fee.
  5. Check delivery dates. Large appliances bought on MLK weekend may not arrive for two to three weeks.

Florida Shopper Note

A few things work differently here:

  • Skip most winter clearance. Florida residents rarely need heavy coats. Light jackets, fleece layers and boots are still worth it if you travel north. Snowbirds who arrived in the fall can find bargains on items for their next trip home.
  • Sales tax still applies. Florida’s 6% state sales tax plus any county surtax applies to MLK purchases. There’s no January sales tax holiday. Florida did make many hurricane-preparedness items permanently tax-exempt in 2025, so you don’t need to time generator or battery purchases to a sale for tax reasons. Check the Florida Department of Revenue’s current list for what qualifies.
  • Hours are normal. Malls and big-box stores generally keep regular hours. Expect heavier crowds in tourist and snowbird areas, including Orlando, Naples, Sarasota and the Keys, where January is peak season.

The Bottom Line on Martin Luther Day Sales

MLK Day is worth your attention if you’re buying a mattress, bedding, an appliance or cold-weather clothing. For TVs and tech, it’s mostly a preview of better prices to come. Set a benchmark price before the weekend, check the price history and don’t count a discount that the price history doesn’t support.

FAQs

What day is MLK Day in 2027?

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Monday, January 18, 2027. It always falls on the third Monday of January. Many MLK Day sales start the Thursday or Friday before and run through the following Tuesday or later.

Are stores open on MLK Day?

Yes. Most major retailers, including Walmart, Target, Costco, Home Depot and Best Buy, plus grocery stores, pharmacies and most restaurants are open, usually on regular hours. Federal offices, the U.S. Postal Service, most banks and the stock markets are closed.

Is MLK Day a good time to buy a mattress or a TV?

For mattresses, often yes. MLK weekend is one of the strongest mattress sale periods of the year, but buy only if the price beats what the brand charged around Black Friday. For TVs, usually no. Prices tend to be better in the two weeks before the Super Bowl and again in spring, when older models are cleared out.

Are MLK Day sales actually good?

Some are. Mattresses, winter clothing clearance, bedding and current-year appliances often hit real lows. Electronics discounts are usually modest and often just repeat December prices. Use a price tracker to confirm a discount before you buy.

Does Amazon have an MLK Day sale?

Amazon doesn’t usually run a branded MLK Day event the way it does Prime Day. Many brands lower prices on their Amazon listings that weekend, though. Check the 90-day price history with a tracker such as CamelCamelCamel or Keepa before treating a price as a deal.

What other names do people use for MLK Day sales?

Shoppers and retailers call them MLK Jr Day sales, Martin Luther King Day sales, Martin Luther Day sales or Martin Luther King holiday sales. They all mean the same holiday-weekend promotions around the third Monday in January.
