OpenAI has begun rolling out a new age estimation system for ChatGPT users, designed to automatically adjust the experience for people under the age of 18. The update is now appearing on consumer ChatGPT plans following several months of testing in select regions.
The goal of the system is to distinguish between teenage users and adults without requiring everyone to manually submit identification. If the model determines that an account likely belongs to someone under 18, ChatGPT shifts that user into a more age-appropriate environment with additional safety restrictions in place.
How ChatGPT Estimates a User’s Age
According to details shared by OpenAI, the age-prediction model evaluates a combination of behavioral and account-level signals rather than relying on a single data point. These signals include how long an account has existed, patterns in usage over time, typical hours of activity, and any age information the user has voluntarily provided.
OpenAI explains its approach in more detail on its official page outlining the company’s strategy for responsible AI development, noting that the system is designed to improve gradually as more data is collected and reviewed.
What Changes for Users Flagged as Under 18
When ChatGPT detects that an account may belong to a younger user, the platform automatically applies stricter content safeguards. These restrictions are meant to reduce exposure to material that may not be appropriate for teens.
The age-adjusted experience limits access to graphic or violent content, sexual or romantic role-play, depictions of self-harm, and viral challenges that involve risky behavior. It also filters out content that promotes extreme beauty standards, unhealthy dieting, or body shaming.
OpenAI says these changes are part of a broader effort to make AI tools safer for younger audiences while still allowing them to use ChatGPT for learning, creativity, and everyday questions.
Adults Can Restore Full Access if Misclassified
OpenAI acknowledges that no automated system is perfect, and some adult users may be flagged incorrectly. To address this, the company is offering a way for affected users to verify their age and regain unrestricted access.
Users who believe their account has been limited by mistake can check their status by going to Settings > Account within ChatGPT. From there, they can complete an identity verification process through Persona, a third-party service used to confirm age eligibility.
Once verification is complete, full access to ChatGPT features is restored.
Age Detection Paves the Way for New Features
Beyond safety improvements, OpenAI suggests that the new age-prediction system will enable more tailored experiences across different age groups. One example is the long-discussed adult mode, which was previously delayed as the company worked to improve its ability to accurately separate teens from adults.
That feature was originally expected to launch late last year but was pushed into early 2026. With the age estimation model now live, OpenAI may be in a position to introduce it sooner rather than later.
The company says it will continue refining the system over time, balancing privacy, accuracy, and user safety as ChatGPT’s audience continues to grow worldwide.
